UPI just had its biggest month ever

In December 2025, India's Unified Payments Interface processed a record 21.63 billion transactions in a single month, the rails now behind most of the country's retail payments.

UPI transactions in December 2025, an all-time monthly high

India’s payment rails just set another record. In December 2025, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processed 21.63 billion transactions in a single month, its highest monthly volume on record, per NPCI data reported by Elets BFSI. That capped a year in which UPI repeatedly cleared the 20 billion a month mark.

A record-setting run

December’s number was not a one-off spike. Through late 2025 and into 2026, UPI has held above 20 billion transactions almost every month, with December standing out as the peak.

February 2026 alone saw 20.39 billion transactions, up about 27% year on year, a reminder that the base itself keeps rising even between record months.

Why UPI is now the system, not a feature

UPI is no longer one option among many. By FY2024-25 it accounted for roughly 84% of India’s retail payment volume, the rails that everything from a ten rupee chai to a business settlement now runs on. When a customer pays, that payment is far more likely to be UPI than card, wallet, or cash.

That dominance changes what the data means. UPI volume is now a live proxy for retail commerce itself, which makes the signal behind it, by region, by time of day, by merchant category, some of the most useful demand data available in India.

What it means for a business

For an India-focused business, three things follow. Demand is increasingly legible in near real time, because the payment and the sale are the same event. Cash-flow patterns show up faster, since settlement is near-instant. And the competitive picture, who is winning which basket at which price, is readable from transaction and pricing data rather than guessed at.

The businesses that act on that signal, instead of waiting for a quarterly report, are the ones that plan stock, pricing, and staffing against what is actually happening.
